A selection of reviews by those who pre-screened the film:
“What a beautiful homage to such an amazing, powerful, beautiful person. I’m deeply touched. I so relate. I hope it gets picked up. Whomever you are exposing it to should see the importance of how this woman walked her path, how important it is for others to see. I deeply felt her and y’all’s love and union. Thank you for sharing. I feel profoundly moved. Thank you.” - Brian G.
“I finished the film preview with delight. It’s a glorious cinematic underground work of art celebrating the Love of Will and Faith. Melissa had a powerful daimon that set her on creative fire. She was indeed the main Work of Art. Melissa’s love was unfiltered and radically unconditional. She brought love and light into the darkness. Witnessing her radical surrender and courage itself is a theophany towards the end of her life. She faced death as she faced the Shadow without blinking. I cried with you in your raw grief, and felt such joy in seeing Melissa becoming pure Essence. This art film is itself an initiation. Thank you!” - Mikkal
“I really want to say that this is an incredibly moving film. It brought me to tears. You did an amazing job with the editing. She was such a dynamic, vital performer and quite the chameleon with her ability to inhabit so many musical genres over her career. I particularly loved the 1995 'Infinity' song - that is very cool. The part covering Melissa's struggle with pain and the cancer, and both of your grief, and the crying, was deeply moving and extremely intense to watch: thanks for being so open about those things. Our Western culture doesn't deal with those 'negative' emotions very well; openly expressing sadness and loss etc. isn't generally accepted compared with some other cultures I've found.” - Megan A.
“This is a really good documentary that honestly shook me up at times. One of my favorite parts is where Melissa is talking about how the spiritual process is put down because it disrupts society’s normal function. A large majority of people will never confront their shadow and do not want to be reminded to do so… so anyone doing this will be seen as a threat or someone to be ignored. Melissa also shows something I think a lot of people are unaware of and that is how challenging navigating trauma actually is. This isn’t something you can just cut off like a light switch, it literally infects you like a virus. And rooting it out is very challenging and it can take a lifetime or many years. I myself lost my dad to cancer and am also on a journey struggling with unknown illnesses. The parts where she was being shown going through pain really moved me, as I think a lot of people never see this side of someone fighting for their life. One thing I struggle with a lot is the belief in free will or fate. Melissa I think shows this really well in her story. Very good movie. I’ll watch this again when its released. There is so much here and its one of those movies you need to come back to.” - Keith T.
“I watched this amazing film with teary eyes and a sense of honor and admiration for her amazing wisdom and “life art”. I feel blessed to have known her and witnessed her warrior path. She was, is, and will be an inspiration for many wounded healers to come. Her courageous soul lives on and will reenter this realm to complete her alchemical mission of awakening the soul of humanity to its depth and breadth. Blessings to you Colin, for your wisdom and endless love for her and for creating this masterpiece to keep her art and wisdom alive.” - Aion F.
“Wow. That tribute to Melissa was phenomenal. I felt it so deeply. Very, very beautiful. Her mind was just incredible and searching for so much good. I feel like I know her better now than when she lived in the physical. So heartfelt. I didn’t just see, I felt her essence. I cried too. That was so deep, just feeling her moments of truth and deep healing. You were so beautiful to her. Just honoring her and so patient with her healing and evolution. Just a beautiful ceremony.” - Justine W.
Melissa Mari: Musical Alchemist of Stage and Psyche
A Documentary Film by Colin E. Davis
In 2013, two California rock musicians came together in a romantic and creative partnership that sparked a metaphysical and spiritual explosion within their consciousness. Their relationship became an alchemical vessel for the healing of their inner wounds and a laboratory for investigating the shadow side of the human psyche. They also developed a progressive rock band which brought their ideas and experiences into performance art, they wrote books and created an esoteric philosophy for life. They realized that what they were doing was rare and important so they documented their progress on video over the course of their 12 year time together which concluded with Melissa’s death in early 2025. Colin Davis, Melissa’s partner and the film’s director produced this documentary to tell the story of their prolific life together and to showcase Melissa’s incredible musical talent, her personal struggles and her absolutely courageous dedication to inner healing. This is a work of pure love for Melissa’s soul and her unique genius as a human being.
